Ducks Obtain Draft Pick From Pens For Rights To G Modig

The Ducks announced on Friday that the club has acquired a sixth-round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft from the Penguins in exchange for the rights to goaltender Mattias Modig. The sixth-round pick originally belonged to the Canadiens. Modig, 23, appeared in 34 contests with Lulea HF of the Swedish Elite League in 2009-10, recording a 2.49 goals-against average and .899 save percentage. Selected by Anaheim in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Modig appeared in a career-high 40 contests with Lulea in 2008-09, finishing third among league goaltenders in GAA (2.25). His four shutouts that season also tied for the league lead. In 121 career Swedish Elite League contests, the Lulea, Sweden native has compiled a 2.53 GAA and eight shutouts.

Rangers Acquire Niemi From Isles In Rare Deal

Rangers President and GM Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Jyri Niemi from the Islanders in exchange for a sixth round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. The Rangers and Niemi have agreed to terms on a contract. Niemi, 19, skated in 50 games with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this past season, registering eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points, along with 67 penalty minutes and a plus-nine rating. The Hameenkyro, Finland native was originally selected as the Islanders? third round pick, 72nd overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. The Rangers and Islanders last completed a trade on November 14, 1972, when the Rangers sent right wing Ron Stewart to the Islanders in exchange for cash.

Coyotes Trade Prospect Jared Staal To Carolina

Coyotes GM Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have acquired a fifth round draft choice in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft from the Hurricanes in exchange for the rights to prospect Jared Staal. The draft choice, which was previously acquired by Carolina from Nashville, currently gives the Coyotes five picks in the upcoming Entry Draft, including two first round choices. Staal, 19, recorded 12-37-49 and 57 penalty minutes in 59 games for Sudbury of the OHL this season. The forward was originally drafted by the Coyotes in the second round (49th overall) of the 2008 Entry Draft.
